BlackJack Driveway Sealer Reviews 2026
The BlackJack Ultra-Maxx 1000 is a premium blacktop filler and sealer designed to improve the appearance of worn asphalt while adding a protective coating. Its rubberized formula contains fine particles that help fill small surface imperfections, leaving the driveway with a more uniform black finish.
One of its biggest advantages is the fast-drying formula. Under ideal conditions, light foot traffic can resume in approximately one hour. This is convenient for homeowners who want to complete a driveway maintenance project without keeping the area closed for several days.
The product is also designed to resist everyday exposure to sun, moisture, and vehicle traffic. However, like other asphalt sealers, its actual service life depends on weather, surface condition, drainage, and how carefully it is applied.
Although the product carries a 10-year limited warranty, that should not be confused with a promise that every driveway will remain in perfect condition for ten years. Driveways exposed to heavy traffic, harsh winters, or standing water may require attention much sooner.
For homeowners seeking an attractive blacktop finish without replacing the entire surface, this BlackJack driveway sealer remains a product worth considering.
Why Buy BlackJack Ultra-Maxx 1000 Driveway Sealer?
Black Jack is an established name in asphalt maintenance products. Its premium 1000-series sealer combines a filler and protective coating in one product, making it suitable for refreshing driveways that are still structurally sound.
Unlike a basic blacktop coating, Ultra-Maxx 1000 uses a polymer-enhanced formulation to provide flexibility and a durable finish. The current Drive-Maxx 1000 version also highlights gel technology, fast drying, and improved application performance.
It is particularly useful for:
- Residential asphalt driveways that have started to fade
- Blacktop walkways and paved access areas
- Suitable asphalt parking surfaces
- Previously sealed driveways needing another protective coating
- Sound asphalt surfaces with small imperfections
However, it isn’t a substitute for structural repairs. If the driveway has large potholes, loose asphalt, deep cracks, or a failing foundation, those problems need to be corrected before sealing.

How to Apply BlackJack Driveway Sealer Correctly
Even the best driveway sealer can fail if the asphalt is dirty, oily, damp, or poorly repaired. Proper preparation is essential for a strong bond and a smooth, long-lasting finish.
Step 1: Clean the Driveway Thoroughly
Remove vehicles, furniture, dirt, leaves, and loose debris. Sweep the entire driveway and clean any grease or oil spots using a driveway-safe degreaser.
Oil stains deserve special attention because leftover oil can prevent the sealer from sticking properly. For more detailed instructions, read our guide on preparing and cleaning a driveway before sealing.
Step 2: Repair Cracks and Potholes
Inspect the asphalt for cracks and damaged areas. Use a compatible asphalt crack filler for larger cracks and an appropriate patching compound for potholes.
BlackJack sealer can help fill minor surface imperfections, but it should not be used as the only repair material for large gaps or deep holes.
Allow all repairs to cure according to the repair product’s instructions before applying the sealer.
Step 3: Check the Weather
Choose a day when the temperature, rain forecast, and surface conditions meet the instructions printed on your container.
Older Ultra-Maxx 1000 instructions generally call for temperatures of 65°F and rising but below 90°F. The current Drive-Maxx 1000 formulation with ClimaSeal technology advertises application and curing at lower temperatures, so the exact version matters.
The manufacturer’s one-hour foot-traffic claim assumes favorable conditions, including temperatures above 75°F, sunny weather, and relative humidity below 35%.
Avoid application when rain, dew, freezing temperatures, or prolonged damp conditions could interfere with drying. Our article about the best time of year to seal a driveway explains how weather affects the process.
Step 4: Mix the Sealer and Apply Evenly
Follow the preparation directions on the container. Older Ultra-Maxx instructions recommend turning the pails upside down before use to help redistribute settled material. Mix the contents thoroughly with a suitable tool before spreading.
Use the recommended brush or squeegee to apply a thin, even coat. Avoid leaving heavy puddles or thick patches, which can cause uneven drying and premature failure.
For the current Drive-Maxx 1000, the manufacturer specifies two uniform coats. Allow the first coat to dry sufficiently before applying the second, following the product’s instructions. Do not assume older and newer versions have identical coating requirements.
Step 5: Allow Enough Drying Time
Under favorable conditions, the sealer may support light foot traffic in as little as one hour. However, wait at least 24 hours before allowing vehicles onto the sealed driveway, and longer if the surface remains tacky or weather conditions are unfavorable.
Keep children, pets, and vehicles away until the coating is ready for use. Rushing this stage can leave tire marks or damage the finish.
Key Benefits of BlackJack Driveway Sealer
- Filler and sealer in one: Helps cover small surface imperfections while adding a protective coating.
- Weather protection: Provides a barrier that helps reduce asphalt exposure to moisture and sunlight.
- Fast drying: Light foot traffic may be possible after one hour in suitable conditions.
- Easy application: The gel formula is designed for convenient spreading with an appropriate applicator.
- Improved appearance: Restores a darker, more uniform look to faded blacktop.
- Premium warranty: Includes a 10-year limited warranty when qualifying conditions are met.
Potential Drawbacks of BlackJack Ultra-Maxx 1000
- Preparation takes time: Cleaning, degreasing, and repairing damaged asphalt are essential before application.
- Weather-sensitive: Humidity, rainfall, and temperature can delay drying and affect performance.
- Not a structural repair: It cannot fix a failing driveway foundation or major asphalt damage.
- Limited surface compatibility: This particular sealer is intended for asphalt rather than concrete or brick.
- Warranty exclusions: Damage from poor drainage, snow removal, and other excluded conditions may not be covered.
- Multiple coats: Current Drive-Maxx 1000 instructions require two coats, which increases the amount of material and labor needed.
How Much BlackJack Driveway Sealer Do You Need?
Coverage is an important consideration when estimating your project cost. Older Ultra-Maxx 1000 retail specifications commonly list approximately 350 square feet per 4.75-gallon container, but actual coverage depends on surface porosity, texture, and the number of coats.
For example, a driveway measuring 20 feet wide and 40 feet long has a total area of 800 square feet.
If a product covers 350 square feet per container for one coat, that area would require approximately three containers for the first coat. Two coats would require roughly six containers at the same application rate.
This is only a planning example. Check the actual coverage rate and coating instructions on your product before buying. The manufacturer also provides a coverage calculator for its current Drive-Maxx line.
Is BlackJack Driveway Sealer Worth Buying?
For a driveway that is structurally sound but looks faded or worn, BlackJack Ultra-Maxx 1000 can be a practical maintenance option. Its combination of filler technology, a dark black finish, and relatively quick drying makes it attractive for homeowners who prefer to handle driveway sealing themselves.
However, the quality of the final result depends heavily on surface preparation. A premium sealer cannot overcome oil contamination, standing water, or loose asphalt.
Before buying, confirm which version is being sold, how many coats it requires, and whether the container size and coverage suit your project.
If your driveway has already been sealed several times, inspect the existing coating before adding another layer. You can learn more about typical resealing intervals in our guide on how long driveway sealcoating usually lasts.
Conclusion: BlackJack Driveway Sealer Reviews
The BlackJack Ultra-Maxx 1000 driveway sealer is a solid choice for homeowners who want to refresh and protect an asphalt driveway. Its filler-and-sealer formula helps cover small imperfections, improves the appearance of weathered blacktop, and offers relatively fast drying under suitable conditions.
The product’s 10-year limited warranty is another selling point, although actual performance varies with traffic, climate, drainage, and application quality.
For the best results, clean the driveway thoroughly, repair significant cracks, apply the required coats evenly, and allow the coating to cure properly before driving on it.
Overall, BlackJack is worth considering if you want an asphalt sealer that combines appearance, convenience, and long-term protective performance without the cost of replacing a driveway that is otherwise in good condition.
Frequently Asked Questions About BlackJack Driveway Sealer
1. Do I need to clear everything from the driveway before sealing it?
Yes. Remove vehicles, furniture, loose debris, dirt, and vegetation. Clean any oil or grease stains with an appropriate driveway cleaner. Allow the surface to reach the moisture condition specified on the product label before applying the sealer.
2. Will BlackJack driveway sealer make the surface slippery when wet?
Any coated surface can become slippery in certain conditions, especially when wet, icy, or contaminated with oil. BlackJack’s textured filler formulation may help maintain surface grip, but it should not be considered slip-proof. Avoid overapplication and standing water.
3. How should I apply BlackJack driveway sealer on asphalt?
Clean the asphalt, repair cracks, mix the sealer thoroughly, and spread it evenly using the applicator recommended by the manufacturer. Current Drive-Maxx 1000 instructions specify two uniform coats. Follow the drying instructions between coats and before reopening the driveway.
4. What tools do I need to apply BlackJack driveway sealer?
- Protective gloves and safety glasses
- Old shoes or suitable work boots
- Stiff broom or leaf blower
- Garden hose or suitable cleaning equipment
- Asphalt-safe degreasing cleaner
- Compatible asphalt crack filler or patch
- Mixing tool
- Manufacturer-recommended brush or squeegee
5. How long does BlackJack Ultra-Maxx 1000 take to dry?
In favorable weather, light foot traffic may be allowed after approximately one hour. Vehicle traffic generally requires at least 24 hours. Cooler temperatures, high humidity, and thick application can extend drying time.
6. How much area does one bucket cover?
Some older 4.75-gallon Ultra-Maxx 1000 listings specify about 350 square feet of coverage. Actual coverage varies by the surface and application rate. For two-coat applications, use the manufacturer’s current coverage guidance to calculate the total amount required.

can it be diluted

can driveway sealer be thinned to spread easier

Seems like and excellent product, I’m in the process of applying it right now! The instruction label says to tip the pail upside down over night… I found that to be helpful, but people need to know to really mix this product with a paint mixer until it is thoroughly mixed before applying! I’m very hopeful for a 10 year warranty.
I have been applying driveway sealer at homes I’ve lived in over the years and always buy the most expensive of a company’s offerings. I last used BlackJack a good 12 years ago and was not happy with the outcome. I then used Latex-ite the last couple of times and have been very happy with the application, look and result. I live in upstate NY and the winters are bad so with the scraping of shovels and snowblower usage no sealer lasts more than a few years. Two weeks ago I decided to give UltraMax1000 a try. My driveway is a smooth 1125 square feet.and in good shape. The results were outstanding. I first washed the driveway, filled ALL cracks, big, medium and small, stirred it with a mortar mixer on my drill, moistened the driveway per directions as I went along, and let it sit 72 hours before driving on it. Took only 4 buckets for 2 coats.
I’m applying ultra-maxx1000 today around 2pm right after work.Their calling for almost 90 with 70% humidity should I apply sealer? Tomorrow supposed to be upper 90’s.Please advise. Thanks
Yes
I’ve put down one coat of Drive-Max 700 (person at store told me the 700 would be better than the 1000 if I had quite a few very narrow cracks). I know I’ll need a 2nd coat and I’ve heard the 1000 is quite a bit thinner — the question is, would there be any negative to putting the 1000 over top of the fully-cured single 700 coat I put down?
No problem. You can use that.
Can I use Black Jack Speed-Patch Blacktop Crack & Hole Repair over the top of very recently sealed driveway? Hired professional showed up b4 I could patch! Not hot tar. Latex? Can wash off with water, but petrolium in sealer also.
Yes
Trying to fill 1/2 crack around a Brick Building where foundation meets asphalt parking lot. Parking lot has been newly sealed but they left a gap up next to building. I’m Tuckpointing the brick foundation and need to fill this Gap.
I have an unopened can of the Ultramax sealer from a year or so ago maybe 1 1/2 years–
Is it still useable? I need 2 for the driveway and bought a new one
Yes
filled Cracks & holes today. Planning to Seal Ultra Max 1000 tomorrow morning through afternoon. For convenience I left Sealer in my Car close to Where I will be Working Sealer. Temperature has dropped to 46*! Should I take it out of Car & put it in my basement which is 68*Steady temp& dehumidifier at 55*? Also don’t have a motor ized stir .. What Can I use to Stir it that won’t break? Also Should I TURN Max 1000 buckets UPSIDE DOWN OVER NIGHT to Help Mix product.
I have sealed new asphalt 1 yr. After. This s Old faded out asphalt but good shape. Only 2 very small holes. One large Crack ACROSS I Filled Black JACK patch. How long should I wait to Seal with Max 1000 After Cleaning Areas?
Can I use a paint. Roller to apply Black Jack 1000?
This is the first time I seal coated a driveway. Large, approximately 1,900 SF. We had six 4.75 gallon buckets that sat for about a year but this was not enough to do the job. Took 11 Buckets total. My advise is not to use the little 18″ squeagie. Get a 36 incher form a roofing supply store, it will probably save yo much time.
One concern I had with the product is that the newer buckets had a much thicker viscosity than the ones we had on hand. The thicker viscosity was harder to work with, did not squeagie out as smoothly. I have to wonder why the big difference in viscosity, why so thick. I sued a paint mixer via drill and made sure it was mixed well.
I suggest calling customer service or tech support to check if you can speak with someone before making a purchase. I called three times today, on 11/06/23, and was hung up on while waiting for tech support.
How long will the Black Jack 1000 take to dry at 45 degrees? It is still wet on my driveway after 15 hours.
I purchased Black jack 500. I found using a softer bristle broom worked better working it in the small cracks then squeegeeing it. I also purchased a 3′ squeegee to smooth it out with. I let it set for 3 full days before driving on it. I am not impressed that when turning on it it leaves marks, like it is coming right off. Its been almost 3 weeks now and still doing it. I have read some reviews and others have said the same thing. Not sure I will buy this product again. Do your homework and research better choosing any sealer out there. I wish I had.
Can it be applied over compacted asphalt millings?
Thank you for your question!
Black Jack driveway sealers are generally designed for use on fully cured, solid asphalt surfaces. Applying it directly over compacted asphalt millings is not recommended unless the surface has been properly bound and sealed to function like a finished asphalt driveway.
If the millings are still loose or not sufficiently compacted and sealed, the sealer may not adhere properly and could peel or wear off prematurely.
To ensure the best results:
– The surface should be clean, smooth, and well-compacted.
– A primer or asphalt binder may be necessary before applying a sealer.
– Always check the product label or consult Black Jack’s customer support for guidance on your specific surface condition.
Hope this helps—and feel free to share an update on how your project goes!
put down on my driveway , followed instructions and i looked great all summer long then winter came ! i only use a 5 hp snowblower for my drive way and not a plow so any way all the back jack 1000 that i put down over the summer was laying in little rubber like balls on the sides of my drive way ( non of it stuck to driveway ) now the drive way looks like before i sealed it! so call up black jack and sent pictures even of the bucket s i used and they want original receipt (witch i can not find , stupid me , i thought i was buying high quality sealer with a 10 year warrantee that it would stick and hold up as promised ) but NOOO ! crap failed and warrantee is useless on a good day ! so please do not use ! unless you like the exercise in putting it down and wasting money and excuses
